thanks for the kind words. the good news, it's my dog. The bad news, it's bone cancer. But ... she's had a good life.

Glad you or a family member don't have cancer. Sorry to hear your dog has it, but sounds like she had a good long life full of fun.
Your second version is even better: the juxtaposition of "spring growth" and "lump" works really well.
I'd even remove this version from here and submit it to Modern Haiku or Frogpond.
